Start with a diagnosis you can compare
Ask what failed, how the fault was confirmed and whether the repair addresses the cause. A recurring refrigerant leak needs an explanation of the leak and repair scope; simply restoring cooling today does not tell you what may happen next season.
Get the repair total, the remaining parts and labor warranty, and a replacement quote for the same home. A capacitor or drain-line problem in otherwise sound equipment is a different proposition from replacing a compressor while the coils and cabinet are badly corroded.
Compare repair cost with replacement value
Our starting rule is to pause and compare replacement when a repair costs more than half the price of a new system, or a system is 12+ years old and needs a major component such as a compressor or coil. This is a decision prompt, not an automatic replacement order.
The comparison: written repair total ÷ complete installed replacement total. A result near or above 50% deserves a careful second look. Compare against the system you would actually buy, including the required installation work, rather than the lowest advertised equipment price.
The cost guide publishes all our approved sizes and tiers. Subtract any confirmed warranty coverage from the repair cost, and consider repeated repair spending alongside the condition of components that will remain. Do not assume money already spent makes the next repair worthwhile.

Use age as a checkpoint, not an expiration date
Under 10 years
Look first at warranty coverage, installation quality and the specific failure. A working system with an isolated repair should not be condemned just because someone quotes a short Florida lifespan.
10–11 years
Review repair history, corrosion, comfort and efficiency together. Obtain both options if faults are recurring or the proposed repair is substantial.
12 years and older
A major compressor or coil repair deserves a complete replacement comparison. A smaller repair can still make sense if the rest of the system is sound and it fits your budget and plans.
These are planning checkpoints, not measured life expectancies. Ask to see the condition that supports the recommendation.
Salt air changes the inspection, not the answer by itself
Coastal exposure can accelerate corrosion on outdoor equipment. A beachside condenser with deteriorating coils, cabinet or connections may be a poorer repair candidate than a protected inland unit of the same age. Maintenance, placement and installation quality matter too.
Claims that every Florida AC lasts only 8–10 years are disputed in homeowner discussions; they are not a dependable expiration date. Have the technician assess your equipment. Replacing one expensive component will not restore the condition of every part around it.
Weigh refrigerant and SEER2 economics
Ask which refrigerant your existing system uses, whether there is a confirmed leak and what a lasting repair requires. New R-32/R-454B equipment brings different equipment and installation requirements; compare a complete, compatible replacement with the actual repair plan.
For replacement, compare matched SEER2 ratings and how the system will manage humidity. The Florida guides use a 14.3 SEER2 baseline for split-system AC; confirm the applicable minimum for the selected type and size. Higher efficiency can lower operating energy, but the bill also depends on ducts, sizing, controls, weather and usage.
Ask for the assumptions behind projected savings. Compare the extra upfront cost with a realistic annual saving before paying for an efficiency upgrade. We do not promise a payback period or a percentage reduction in your bill.

Should I replace an AC just because it is 10 years old?
No. Ten years is a useful checkpoint for condition, repair history and warranty, not an expiration date. Compare the fault and repair price with the condition of the rest of the system.
What is the 50% repair rule?
Divide the written repair price by a complete installed replacement price for the system you would choose. Near or above 50%, compare replacement carefully. Warranty coverage, equipment condition and your plans can change the decision.
Does salt air mean I need a new unit?
Salt air can accelerate corrosion, but exposure alone does not establish that replacement is necessary. Ask the technician to show you the condition of the coils, cabinet and connections and explain what a repair would leave unresolved.
